Learning Inflectional Classes

چکیده

We describe several experiments in computational modeling that require a system to infer the existence of inflectional classes, which are morphological classes that play a role in neither syntax nor semantics. A feed-forward connectionist model will utilize patterns of activation (rather than units) in its hidden layer to encode such abstract morphological patterns. We compare this with discussion of similar problems by linguists (Aronoff, 1994; Haspelmath, 2002) and psycholinguists (MacWhinney, Leinbach, Taraban, & McDonald, 1989) and draw conclusions regarding the relationship between the goals and psycholinguistics studies of language acquisition.

Assigning Inflectional Paradigms to Named Entities by Linear Successive Abstraction

This paper describes how a supervised learning method is used for assigning inflectional paradigms to organizational named entities as the main prerequisite for generating a morphological lexicon of these entities. An inflectional paradigm consists of a set of rules for generating all forms of a lexicon entry. A morphological lexicon consists of lexicon entries and their corresponding forms. Th...

Canonical Inflectional Classes

Inflectional classes are a basic notion in morphology, though occasionally their existence is challenged. In trying to get a new perspective on complex phenomena, like inflectional classes, we may take a ‘canonical’ approach. This means that we extrapolate from what there is to what there might be, in order to define the theoretical space. Within that scheme of theoretical possibilities we can ...

Extracting inflectional class assignment in Pite Saami: Nouns, verbs and those pesky adjectives

The main goal of this paper is to describe to what extent the three main open word classes in Pite Saami (nouns, verbs and adjectives) can be automatically assigned to inflectional classes in language technology, specifically for a Finite State Transducer. For each of these word classes, the relevant structural features necessary for determining inflectional class membership are described. In t...

Dissociative neural correlates of semantic processing of nouns and verbs in Chinese - A language with minimal inflectional morphology

Numerous studies using various techniques and methodologies have demonstrated distinctive responses to nouns and verbs both at the behavioral and neurological levels. However, since the great majority of these studies involved tasks employing pictorial stimuli and languages with rich inflectional morphology, it is not clear whether word class effects resulted from semantic differences between o...

Morphemic Analysis Awareness: A Boon or Bane on ESL Students’ Vocabulary Learning Strategy

This study investigated the impact of inflectional and derivational morphemic analysis awareness on ESL secondary school students’ vocabulary learning strategy. The quasi-experimental study was conducted with 106 low proficiency secondary school students in two experimental groups (inflectional and derivational) and one control group. The students’ vocabulary acquisition was assessed through tw...
